Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state early analysis show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the public for details.
A high-ranking official stated the incident left him speechless and had to be solved quickly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
