In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
