Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
