This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
