Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
